Cat Kitten
What is the best way to introduce another cat/kitten to the cat I have had for about 6 months?
I am a little nervous about how my cat will react to a new friend. My cat is male and he has been fixed and usually has a very laid back attitude. I just want to introduce him to his new friend the right way.
Also, should I get a kitten or a older cat and should it be female or male?
Kitten… kitten kitten….
Definitely get a kitten.. your “resident’ cat will adjust to a kitten MUCH more quickly than it will ajust to another adult cat.. And I’ve NEVER had a problem with them becoming best friends.. I am nervous at so many people telling you to get one similar in age.. in my VAST experience, that’s not what’s important
I could go into cat psychology and hierarchy, but I won’t.. just understand that a KITTEN is MUCH less “intimidating” to an older cat.. It accepts the lower “rung of the ladder” very easily, and this makes it a VERY quick adjustment for the two getting along..
the ONE time we got a new adult cat instead of a kitten, it was ONE YEAR before the cats (new cat and the adult cats we already had) would tolerate each other’s presence without a screaming match.. They were displaying seriously territorial behavior..
But with introducing a new KITTEN to an adult, I’ve always had them playing within 3 weeks, and become best friends.. a kitten doesn’t have the sense of “Territory” that an adult has, and therefore isn’t a “threat” to the older cats dominance
Okay.. maybe I DID delve into cat psycology and heirarcy more than I intended to.. LOL.. sorry… I was just nervous that so many people were telling you to go same age.. I think they just think it’s a good idea..
male/female kitten doesn’t matter much, but SOMETIMES a cat will ajust to a kitten of the opposite gender just a TAD quicker.. but doesn’t matter much.. if you find a little boy you fall in love with, get him..
Just fix either male/female before they turn 7 months old.. no later..
As for introducing.. first we’ll talk about the kitten.. a kitten will be frightened when brought to a new home, but will ajust quickly.. you MAY want to give her 3-7 days ajustment period in her own “space” (say, a laundry room or spare room away from your big boy..) This will give her the opportunity to ajust to her new environment without a lot of hostility from the bigger boy.. and it will give him a chance to get used to the kitten’s presence and smell (by him hearing things in that room and smelling through the crack in the door)…
By day 5 for sure you can begin allowing them in the same largish room for periods of supervised time….. allow them to avoid each other or interact as they see fit.. Don’t force them into each other’s face, but encourage them to stay in the same room… DON’T be freaked out by hissing/spitting/growling, even some slapping.. It will happen and it’s totally normal.. and your bigger cat will NOT really harm the little one, even if he gives her a couple bops on the head. He must teach her her boundaries and “who’s boss” if they are goign to get along and become good friends..
so.. gradually increase the times they are not separated, and by day 7, kitten should have the run of the house..
The goal is to let THEM work it out.. they will..
and they’ll become good friends..
Cats, despite their (undeserved) reputation as loners, do greatly enjoy the company of another cat.. I really think it “adds something” to their life, and prevents boredom..
Usually within 2 weeks maximum, your older cat and younger cat should be fine with each other’s presence..
and soon after that, your older cat will probably be playing with the kitten.. .
GOod luck.. email me if you have any further questions..
I’ve lived with cats my whole life, and gone through this senareo half a dozen times at least… It always works out.. they always become friends.
As long as at least one of them is a KITTEN.. please get a kitten.. an adult will be much more of a gamble as to how it will get along with your other cat…
Cat Kitten

Neutering Your Cat Shows that You Care
The hordes of homeless and feral cats everywhere are growing by leaps and bounds, and finally people are beginning to wake up to the necessity of neutering their cats.
Population Explosion
Because cats can reproduce several times a year, and kittens mature quickly, just 2 feral cats (the wild offspring of domestic cats) can quickly become 2,000. In fact, the feline reproduction statistics are staggering. 2 uncontrolled breeding cats produce: 2 litters a year, at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter. Continued breeding will produce 12 cats the first year, 66 cats the second year, 2,201 cats in the third year, 3,822 cats in the fourth year, 12,680 cats in the fifth year, and on and on . . .
Unaltered Cats Spread Disease
Many of these feral cats are actually unaltered pet cats (or their offspring) that were released by owners who could no longer care for them. A colony of feral cats can spread diseases among pet cats and dogs in the area.
Even when these cats are fairly healthy, they are usually infested with fleas. Hungry cats will raid trash cans, and playful kittens will destroy shrubbery and soil lawn furniture.
Noise Pollution From Cats In Heat
When female cats are in heat, the colony can keep neighbors awake all night with their fighting and howling
Spaying and neutering cats provides several important benefits in addition to reducing the number of unwanted cats. If you have an un-neutered female cat at home, the sound of her mewling pitifully at the door will soon be joined by the yowling and shrieking of every tomcat in the neighborhood. Both indoor and outdoor tomcats will try to mark everything in sight with their odorous spray.
Reproductive Cancers In Unaltered Cats
Certain types of cancer are much more common in unaltered cats. These cancers of the reproductive organs are very rare in cats that are altered prior to 1 year of age. Unaltered cats can also develop a number of reproductive diseases that are contagious.
Help Make Every Cat A Wanted Cat
Kittens can be altered at quite a young age. Some humane societies routinely alter kittens at 8 weeks. While some veterinarians feel that it is better to wait until kittens are 5 or 6 months, that is often simply not a option. Certainly for feral kittens who are trapped for altering, then released back into their colonies, or for those who share a home with other unaltered cats, neutering at the earliest opportunity is critical.
Most cats heal well and without incident after being neutered. However, a cat can contract an infection in the incision. Check your cat daily to be sure the incision area has not turned red and puffy. If you notice your cat licking or chewing at the stitches, your vet may suggest a surgery collar to keep the stitches out of reach until the incision is healed. While male cats can be active and bouncy without injuring themselves after neutering, female cats should be confined indoors for a few days after the surgery.
Feline “Zero Population Growth”
Unless you’re a cat breeder, your cat almost certainly would be better off neutered. The typical cost of neutering a cat is about $125 for a female and $65 for a male. If the cost is too much for you to afford, many communities have special funds available for neutering cats. Your humane society or veterinarian can give you more information.

Why does my girlfriend’s ADULT cat love to eat KITTEN chow?
We give the cat kitten chow as a treat, and the cat loves it.
Why would an adult cat prefer to eat kitten chow over regular adult cat food?
Cats have different tastes just like humans do.
Unfortunately most of the kitten formulas as well as commercial cat food are not of very high quality. Your cat would benefit greatly from a natural diet, which is a moist, meat-based food.
I wouldn‘t recommend feeding any dry food. Cats are designed to get their water from food. That’s the way nature designed them, they have low thirst drive. When fed dry, they won’t drink enough to compensate for the lack of moisture. They will only consume about 50% of the water they should be having. This can lead to kidney disease, UTI, crystals, blockage, renal failure and more. Especially if you have a tom, this is crucial. Male cats have a narrower urethra than female cats and are more prone to blockage from the crystals.
Free feeding also contributes to obesity. And the fact that dry food is over-processed means, that most of it’s little nutrition has been already destroyed, leaving almost no nutrients for your cat. It needs to eat more to meet it’s needs, and in the process consumes more calories from the fillers.
Btw wetting the dry food will not help. There’s bacteria on the kibble and the water would just allow it to grow.
The only way to give the cat it’s natural hydration is to feed it wet food only.
But some wet foods are not of a very high quality, either. That goes for most commercial foods. Just like the dry, they are often made with cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, soy, rice etc. These are not a part of cat’s natural diet (it’s an obligate carnivore – it eats meat) and they are not designed to digest it. Grain is carbohydrate which the cats can’t process and it turns into blood sugar and fat, causing diabetes and obesity. In the wild, where cats only hunt for meat, diabetes and obesity are unheard of. It’s us who cause these by feeding a species inappropriate food.
We usually read labels on our food, but rarely on the food for our cats. Learn to read the label and understand the ingredients. The healthiest food to feed apart from raw feeding is grain-free wet food with no by-product. Some good brands are Wellness CORE, EVO, Merrick, Nature’s Variety, Blue Buffalo Wilderness and more. These will give your cat the proper hydration and nutrition it’s designed to get and it will be strong and healthy.
If you switch it’s diet, do it gradually, by mixing the current food with the new one over couple of weeks until there’s only the new. This will prevent diarrhea and upset stomach.
You will probably get a lot of different answers, so google feline nutrition or look at the links below, and do the research for yourself. I personally wasn’t able to find one reliable source (besides the pet food industry) that would say grain is beneficial for cats or that dry is beneficial for them.

Good luck!
